Residential window tinting: What you need to know

Homeowners may think that window tinting in their home is a bit of a luxury, but in reality, this one home improvement project or new construction element has multiple benefits that can improve your customers’ quality of life and budget.

You may want to educate your customer about residential window tinting if you’ve ever heard them say one (or all) of the following:

1) “My energy bill is too high.”

Window tinting can lower energy costs. The insulating effect provided by the film prevents heat and cold from escaping their house. The savings will vary depending on factors such as the size of the home, the age and condition of the windows, and what part of the country they live in. For example, the warmer the climate and the older the home, the bigger the savings.

2) “This room is too hot to use during the summer.”

In addition to saving energy costs, tinting windows can also make a home more comfortable by reducing the heat and the glare of the sun’s rays. Balanced temperatures mean rooms can be used any time, no matter how much the sun shines.

3) “The sunlight in this room is fading my furniture.”

If your customer is noticing negative effects of sun exposure on their furniture or hardwood floors, tinted windows can help. From brands like 3MLlumar and many more, the estimated UV reduction on most window films is about 99%. This means tinted glass can almost completely eliminate harmful rays from the sun and protect their belongings.

4) “We never open the blinds because we like our privacy.”

So, your customer likes their privacy? No problem. Certain shades of tinted film can prevent others from seeing into their home behind the glass.

How technology is improving residential window tinting

Tinted glass is a thin layer of film applied to windows in order to block out UV rays from the sun, which in turn helps regulate the flow of heat through home windows.

In the past, options were limited and not aesthetically appealing. Today, your customers can choose from a range of films, including colored and shaded, that are nearly invisible. There are options to help with privacy or security, UV ray protection, heat reduction, and fade and glare protection. Prioritizing your customers’ needs will help you recommend the right residential tint.

How window tinting can save you money

Installation:

Installation of residential window tinting is fairly simple. The actual time it takes depends on how many windows the film is to be installed and the complexity of the windows. Once your customer has selected the type of film he or she would like to use, the installation process involves cleaning and prepping the windows and applying the films using water and a squeegee.

Cost:

The cost of tinting glass in residential projects varies depending on:

  • The type of film your customer selects
  • How large and how many windows they intend to cover
  • The complexity of the windows
  • The cost of labor in their area

Care and maintenance:

Once the film is applied to your customers’ windows, it will last for a long time. The warranties on the products used typically cover the film for five years, with some lasting 10-15 years, but the film can last over 20 years. It is possible to see a “fogginess” in the film right after it’s installed, which is due to a small amount of moisture left behind from the installation process. However, this typically disappears within a couple of days.

There is no maintenance required for the film to do its job, and homeowners can clean their windows as they normally would. Just stay away from abrasive paper towels or other rough materials that could damage the film on the windows.
